Mawista offers a scholarship to a person studying in Germany from abroad who has a child, in order to reduce additional financial stress associated with having children while studying abroad.

The purpose of the award is to permit a short, exploratory research trip abroad to determine the feasibility of a Ph. D. dissertation topic dealing with some facet of Latin American history.

This scholarship is named in honor of Dr. William Louis Gaines, President of IES from 1974-1992. Dr. Gaines was dedicated to strengthening IES' academic framework, broadening the scope of IES' locations, and securing the financial foundation of the organization.
